Only patients diagnosed with one of the qualifying conditions for a medical card in New Mexico may access medical mj in the state. These medical conditions are included in the New Mexico medical mj laws as one of the primary requirements for medical mj in the state.
New Mexico Medical Card Requirements: How to Qualify
New Mexico has an expansive list of medical conditions that qualify for mj treatment. At the moment, however, there are 28 qualifying conditions for a medical card in New Mexico. They include:

- Damage to the Nervous Tissue of the Spinal Cord (with objective neurological indication of intractable spasticity)

- Glaucoma
- Hepatitis C Infection currently receiving antiviral therapy
- HIV/AIDS
- Hospice Care
- Huntington’s disease
- Inclusion Body Myositis
- Inflammatory autoimmune-mediated Arthritis
- Intractable Nausea/Vomiting
- Lewy Body Disease
- Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
- Obstructive Sleep Apnea
- Opioid Use Disorder
- Painful Peripheral Neuropathy
- Parkinson’s disease
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
- Severe Anorexia/Cachexia
- Severe Chronic Pain
- Spasmodic Torticollis (Cervical Dystonia)
- Spinal Muscular Atrophy
- Ulcerative Colitis (IBD)
It’s noteworthy that for patients who do not have any qualifying conditions if their doctor believes they might benefit from medicinal mj, they can petition the Medical Advisory Board to add their condition to the current list.
New Mexico Medical MJ Program
When applying for a New Mexico medical card for the first time, your medical evaluation must be done in person. Even so, this shouldn’t deter patients from applying for the state’s medical mj program.
- The first step is booking an appointment with a qualified mmj doctor in Albuquerque, NM with QuickMedCards.
- Once the appointment time is set, patients should download, print out and complete the New and Returning Medical MJ Patient Application before their appointment.

Medical MJ Card Requirements New Mexico (NM)
- Patients must be at least 18 years old. If the patient is under 18 they may qualify as a minor but, their parents or legal guardians must apply on their behalf as their registered designated caregivers.
- The patient must be diagnosed with one or more of the qualifying conditions for a medical card in New Mexico. Plus, they must have a physically signed New and Returning Medical MJ Patient Application.
What Documents Do I Need to Submit?
New Mexico qualifying patients must ensure they attach the following documents when sending or dropping off their applications:
- A filled out and complete New and Returning Medical MJ Patient Application. (Filled and signed by you and your doctor)
- A clear (face visible) copy of your New Mexico Photo ID or New Mexico Driver’s License. (Temporary NM Photo IDs and Driver’s License are accepted)
- A copy of a one-page clinic note related to the qualifying condition.
- A completed Medical MJ Caregiver Application (For caregivers)
- A completed Medical Power of Attorney or Legal Guardianship Paperwork to indicate legal authority (For qualifying patients under 18)
- A birth certificate. (For minors)
How Much is a MMJ Card in New Mexico?
Unlike most states, New Mexico doesn’t have a fee for its medical mj card. However, patients will pay consultation fees to their certifying doctor. Fees usually vary but QuickMedCards has a reputation of being the cheapest place to get a medical card in Albuquerque, New Mexico at $124.
Where to Get Medical MJ in New Mexico?
Approved New Mexico patients with a medical card have the option of buying medical mj from licensed mj dispensaries in NM or planting mj.
However, to plant mj, patients must apply and get approved for a Personal Production License (PPL). Also, the PPL is accompanied by an annual $30 fee.
