Maryland marijuana doctors only recommend cannabis to patients diagnosed with the qualifying conditions for a medical card. Although being diagnosed with a qualifying illness is a crucial requirement for a medical marijuana card in Maryland, it is just one of several requirements.
How to Qualify for a Medical Marijuana Card in Maryland (MD)
The Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission determines which ailments make it to the list of conditions. Currently, the qualifying conditions for a medical card in Maryland include:
- Anorexia
- Cachexia
- Glaucoma
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Seizures
- Severe nausea
- Severe or chronic pain
- Persistent or severe muscle spasms
- Wasting syndrome
- A chronic medical condition that is severe and for which other treatments have been ineffective.
Maryland Medical Marijuana Program
The Maryland medical marijuana program is open for both qualifying adults and minors. Although the registration processes and requirements differ, both applications must be done online.
Adult patient registration process:
- Creating an account in the MMCC Registry (OneStop Portal).
- Completing and submitting the online application.
- Verifying your email address.
- Getting certified for medical marijuana by a cannabis doctor registered with the MMCC.
- Receiving your Maryland medical marijuana card.
For minor patients:
The registration process is usually done by a registered caregiver who must be their parent or legal guardian.
- Registering the minor patient’s caregiver. Once fully registered, the caregiver will get an ID Number from the MMCC.
- Gathering the required files and information to register the minor.
- Completing and submitting the minor patient’s online application.
- Verifying the caregiver’s email address.
- Getting a physician’s written medical cannabis certification for the minor.
- Getting the minor’s Maryland medical marijuana card (MMCC card).

Maryland Medical Marijuana Card Requirements
- To apply as an adult patient, you must be at least 18 years old. Younger patients can apply as minors, but their parent or legal guardian must apply for medical marijuana on their behalf. (As their registered caregiver)
- You must live in Maryland.
- Be diagnosed with a qualifying medical condition and have a cannabis recommendation from a qualified marijuana doctor in Maryland.
What Documents Do I Need to Submit?
Applying for the Maryland medical marijuana card requires that patients complete the application in one session. The progress during the application can’t be paused and saved for later. Therefore, patients need to have all their documents ready when applying.
These are the documents that you will need:
- A clear, colored, full-face photograph submitted in digital format.
- A Physician Recommendation (dated within 30 days of application submission)
- Proof of identity. Which should be a digital, color copy of either an MD ID, driver’s license, or U.S. passport.
- Two digital, color copies of proof of Maryland residency. If the proof of identity provided wasn’t an MD driver’s license, MVA ID, or doesn’t indicate their current address. This could be a utility bill, bank account statement, or property tax bill.
How to Get Medical Marijuana in Maryland
Patients can visit Maryland dispensaries to buy medical marijuana after receiving their Maryland medical card or after printing their temporary MMCC Patient ID card.
When buying medical marijuana at a licensed MD dispensary patients must present their MMCC ID card. Then, the dispensary agent will verify the patient’s certification in the Commission’s database before proceeding with any transaction.
Certified patients can buy at most a 30-day supply of medicinal cannabis at a time.
Important: if certified patients don’t use their Maryland medical card (MMCC ID card) at a licensed dispensary in MD within 120 days of issue; the card becomes null and void.
