Patients in Minnesota must receive a certification from a licensed MN cannabis doctor before they can enroll in the state medical marijuana program. The cannabis doctor’s evaluation will verify that the patient suffers from one of the medical conditions on the list of qualifying conditions for medical marijuana in MN.
How to Get Medical Marijuana in Minnesota
To get medically prescribed marijuana one needs to qualify for certain conditions. The 2021 list of the qualifying conditions for medical marijuana in MN include:
- Alzheimer’s disease
- Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
- Autism
- Cancer, associated with chronic pain, nausea or severe vomiting, or cachexia or severe wasting
- Chronic motor or vocal tic disorder (effective August 2021)
- Chronic pain
- Glaucoma
- HIV/AIDS
- Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn’s disease
- Intractable pain
- Obstructive sleep apnea
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Seizures, including those caused by epilepsy
- Severe and persistent muscle spasms, including those synonymous with multiple sclerosis (MS).
- Sickle cell disease (effective August 2021)
- Terminal illness, with a probable life expectancy of less than one year. And only if the terminal illness or its treatment causes severe pain, nausea or severe vomiting, or cachexia or severe wasting.
- Tourette Syndrome
Minnesota Medical Cannabis Program
Registering for the Minnesota medical cannabis program is a straightforward process:
- Complete the Patient E-mail and Acknowledgement Form (PDF)
- Submitting a Patient E-mail and Acknowledgement Form (PDF) to your cannabis doctor.
- Get certified for medical marijuana in MN.
- After getting certified, patients will receive an email from the Office of Medical Cannabis. The email will include a link they will use to register and an important information sheet that they have to review before completing their registration.
- Next, register online with the Office of Medical Cannabis.
- After approval, patients must complete the patient self-evaluation report to expedite their visit to the Cannabis Patient Center (CPC).

MN Medical Card Requirements
- For adult applications, the patient must be 18 years of age or older.
- If the patient is a minor, their parent or legal guardian must register as a caregiver and apply on their behalf.
- Only residents of Minnesota may qualify for the medical cannabis program.
- Patients must be certified for medical cannabis by a qualified marijuana doctor.
What Documents Do I Need to Submit?
When registering for Minnesota’s medical cannabis program, qualifying patients should have an image of their government-issued photo identification. For example, their Minnesota ID or driver’s license.
Where to Get Medical Cannabis in Minnesota
Medical cannabis is available at 13 Cannabis Patient Centers (CPC) across Minnesota. This is different from most states where medical cannabis is available in marijuana dispensaries.
Additionally, qualified patients must complete the patient self-evaluation form before going to the CPC to get their medicine. And, this should be done before every visit to the CPC.
Most importantly, medicinal cannabis in Minnesota is available in any delivery method that doesn’t require the use of dried leaves or plant form. For instance:
